Statistics on doctorate holders present data on PhD graduates from Greek universities

1,923 new doctorates were awarded in 2022 by Greek Universities

As evidenced by the deposition data of PhD theses in the National Archive of PhD Theses, 1.923 new doctorate holders were proclaimed in 2022 by Greek Universities. In respect to the allocation of new doctorate holders, most of doctoral dissertations were completed at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with percentages of 23.2% and 17.4% respectively. Τhe university of Patras is next with 7.5%, followed by the National Technical University of Athens (7.0%), the University of Ioannina (6.6%), the University of Thessaly (5.8%) and the Democritus University of Thrace (5.7%).

The period of doctoral studies

According to the data concerning the period of doctoral studies and specifically the reasons of conducting a doctoral dissertation, personal interest was the leading reason with a percentage of 60.1%, followed by the prospect of pursuing an academic career (21.1%) and aspiration of better career opportunities (16.5%).

Scientific fields of doctoral dissertations

Most of doctoral dissertations completed in 2022 belong to the scientific fields of Medical & Health Sciences (26.0%), Social Sciences (24.1%) and Natural Sciences (22.0%).

The use of digital technologies in doctoral research

In order to fulfill research requirements during their doctoral studies, new doctorate holders deployed new impactful digital technologies. Specifically, 21.1% developed or used data mining & machine learning software, 14.7% used Big Data, 10.7% used the Internet of Things, 9.4% used participative networks for accessing data and 7,2% got involved into robotics.

Employment data and future aspirations of new PhD holders

Right after the completion of their doctoral studies, 82.3% of new doctorate holders are employed. Most of them work in the same position they owned before their proclamation (63.0%, most of whom expertise in Medical & Health Sciences). A percentage of 14.9% is unemployed and is currently looking for a job (the majority of them belong to the field of Natural Sciences.
