Innovation in Greek Enterprises 2020-2022
During the period 2020-2022, Innovation-Active Enterprises in Greece represented 65.5% of the total number of enterprises, while those that introduced new or improved products or business processes (Innovative Enterprises) accounted for 64.1%. Among all enterprises, 61.6% introduced new or improved business processes, while 46.6% introduced new or improved goods and/or services to their market.
Analyzing how Greek businesses innovate, the types of innovations they introduce, as well as the reasons why they do not innovate, Eurostat, with the contribution of the National Documentation Centre (EKT), developed a new classification system that organizes businesses into seven innovation profiles, with the top category (at 24.3%) being innovative enterprises that internally develop product innovations without novelties.
The percentage of innovation-active enterprises varies by sector of economic activity and rises as the scale of the enterprises grows.
In the Industry sector, the percentage of innovation active enterprises for the period 2020-2022 stands at 64.4%. The highest percentages of innovation active enterprises are recorded in the populous Manufacturing sector. In the Services sector, the percentage of innovation active enterprises for the period 2020-2022 stands at 66.2%. The highest percentage of innovation active enterprises (71.9%) is recorded in the "Information and Communication" sector.
The total expenditure for innovation activities in 2022 amounted to 3.6 billion €, an increase of 22.1% compared to 2020, continuing the upward trend since 2014. This expenditure is divided as follows: 52% of expenditures relate for R&D activities, either in-house R&D or contracted-out R&D by the enterprise to other enterprises (external R&D) and 48% relate to other innovation activities.
A total of 20.6% of innovation-active enterprises received public funding for their innovation activities. Specifically, 14.1% received funding from the Central Government (12.5% through the NSRF or RRF), 8% from regional authorities (7.5% through the NSRF), 3.1% via the European programs "Horizon 2020" and "Horizon Europe," and 3% via other European programs.
Environment and Innovations with Environmental Benefits 2020-2022
A total of 25% of enterprises believe that their operations are directly affected by rising costs resulting from climate change, while 21.4% consider the impacts of extreme weather conditions to be very significant. Among innovation-active enterprises, 60.7% report that they have introduced some innovation with environmental benefits, setting as the primary goal the reduction of energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
