Monitoring is an essential part of the implementation of public policies at national, European and international level. With the main objective being early understand successes or lags, monitoring systems implemented and indicators published by organisations such as the National Documentation Center (EKT), serve as the core for evidence-based policy making as well as a valuable source of information for citizens.

In its role of producing European official RDI statistics, EKT publishes a set of indicators for Greece which are used to monitor EU strategies and flagship initiatives (Europe 2020, Innovation Union, European Semester, the European Research Area) and international policies (Sustainable Development Goals) and which are included in international scoreboards and rankings (The European Innovation Scoreboard, The Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI, The Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard).

At national level, EKT is the main provider of monitoring indicators for national and regional Smart Specialisation Strategies RIS3, the Operational Programme ‘Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation’ (EPAnEK) and a series of funding initiatives that support early-stage scientists and researchers. The indicators follow the progress of implementation, enabling corrective and/or improvement measures, while contributing to assess their impact.
