Data indicates that gender equality in the modern research arena and the knowledge society continues to be a challenge not only in Greece.

High participation of women in Research and Development personnel in Greece (2021)

In 2021, women made up 42.8% of R&D personnel in Greece, one of the high percentages in the EU27. Greece is in 7th place among the EU27 countries.

The participation of women doctorate holders in scientific fields (2022)

Based on the statistics of PhDs awarded by a Greek university in 2022, women outnumber men in four out of six scientific fields: Social Sciences (54.5%), Humanities (54.4%), Agricultural Sciences (53.6%), Medical & Health Sciences (51.6%).

The participation of women in national projects and actions to support young scientists

The participation of women in national projects and support actions for young scientists financed by the European Social Fund has increased. Specifically, in the Actions to support PhD candidates, women clearly outnumber men, registering a participation rate of 60.5%. The same applies to the support actions for postdoctoral researchers and young researchers (50.6%). Conversely, in the case of actions to enhance teaching experience, women fall behind men in all the academic years in which the specific action is implemented.
