8 March: We strengthen the position of women in Research & Development

The National Documentation  Centre (EKT) participated in the celebration of International Women's Day (March 8) by sending a message of awareness and constant vigilance to institutions, the research and academic community, the world of business and youth entrepreneurship. The position of women in science, research and innovation improves when policymakers study the data and promote appropriate policies and when companies recognise the need for women to participate in positions of responsibility.

EKT Survey: COVID-19 and young researchers

The daily life of Greek researchers under the conditions of the pandemic: the opportunities, difficulties, and differences based on gender, are reflected in the new National Documentation Centre (EKT) publication entitled 'COVID-19 and young Greek researchers. The influence of the pandemic on their research activity'. The publication presents the findings of a survey conducted by EKT between April 15 and May 5, 2020, on a population of mainly young scientists who are conducting research.

60.3% of enterprises in Greece are innovative

The percentage of innovative enterprises in Greece for the period 2016-2018 rose to 60.3%, showing an increase of 2.6 percentage points compared to the period 2014-2016, according to preliminary data on innovation in Greek enterprises published by the National Documentation Centre (EKT).

EKT's Census survey for Greek PhD Holders is underway

A survey on the professional and geographical mobility of Greek PhD holders is being conducted by the National Documentation  Centre (EKT) in collaboration with the Regional Development and Policy Research Unit , University of Macedonia. This is an online survey of all Greek PhD holders aims to record their professional and geographical mobility, both in Greece and abroad, and to highlight the main parameters that affect their decisions.

Increase in applications for R&D tax incentives 2010-2016

A continuous increase in the number of applications by enterprises wishing to receive tax benefits in terms of Research and Development (R&D) activities over the period 2010-2016, as well as the corresponding expenditure, is captured in a new study by the National Documentation Centre (EKT). The majority of applications came from small and medium-sized enterprises, while most of the R&D expenditure was attributed to large corporates.

Introducing Human Capital in Greek Higher Education Institutes in the Postcrisis Era. The Case of the “Acquisition of Academic Teaching Experience for New Scientists” Public Initiative

Due to the decade-long economic crisis in Greece, the number of academic personnel in tertiary education significantly decreased. To counter this, the “Acquisition of Academic Teaching Experience for New Scientists” initiative was established in 2016. The aim was to introduce young scientists as adjunct teaching personnel. In this paper, we present evidence concerning this policy measure. The data has been compiled through a survey questionnaire addressed at all the recipients of the initiative.

The study ‘Statistics on PhD students who graduated from Greek Universities 2018’ is the fourth in the series published by EKT on an annual basis (previous studies were conducted for the years 2015, 2016, 2017).

R&D expenditure in the Business Enterprise sector exceeded 1 billion euro in Greece in 2018

In 2018, Research & Development (R&D) expenditure in the business enterprise sector exceeded 1 billion euro, reaching 1049.5 million euro, according to preliminary data released by the National Documentation Centre and transmitted to Eurostat. Publication of the indicators is part of EKT’s regular production of official Research, Development and Innovation statistics for Greece as National authority of the Hellenic Statistical System.

Improved Greek innovation performance 2018

The European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS), published in June, showed that there was an improvement in Greece’s innovation performance in 2018. According to new data, the European Commission announced the EU's innovation performance has shown improvement in the last four years, and for the first time, Europe surpassed the innovation level of the United States of America.

Gradual progress towards reducing disparities and gender convergence in research, technology and innovation has been recorded in recent years, according to the ‘She Figures 2018’ report recently published by the European Commission. The ‘She Figures’ report, compiled by the Directorate General for Research and Innovation, European Commission, has been published every three years since 2003.

Important EKT findings on the effectiveness of the European Social Fund assistance to researchers

The results of the interventions of the European Social Fund in supporting researchers, were presented by EKT, as the body responsible for implementing the evaluation of the action. The event, organised by the Special Secretariat for the Management of Sectoral OPs of the European Social Fund (ESF), was held on Friday April 5 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, in the presence of representatives of public institutions, academic and research organisations.

Greece is ranked 9th in the percentage of innovative enterprises in Europe for the three-year period 2014-2016

Greece has moved up three places in the European ranking of innovative enterprises for the three-year period 2014-2016, reaching the 9th position among the EU-28 member states. The percentage of Greek innovative enterprises was 57.7%, an increase of 6.7 percentage points when compared with the three-year period 2012-2014, according to the CIS (Community Innovation Survey). The survey in Greece was carried out by the National Documentation Centre (EKT), in collaboration with the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

EU Research & Development expenditure 2017 is 2.07%

A significant increase in Research and Development (R&D) expenditure in Greece was recorded over the decade 2007-2017 according to the statistics recently published by Eurostat, the EU's statistical service. In 2017, R&D expenditure was 1.13% of GDP, almost double the 0,58% in 2007. Despite the significant increase, this performance still lagged behind the European average (2.07%), and, in 2017,  put Greece in 18th place in the European Union.
